Yenta is a Yiddish term that is used to refer to a busybody, gossip or meddler who interferes in others’ affairs or spreads rumors about them. It specifically refers to a woman who loves to talk, meddle in other people's business, and act as the community matchmaker. In Jewish culture, a yenta would often be seen as someone who is well-intentioned, but also nosy and intrusive. However, the term has also been used in a derogatory way to describe a woman who is overly talkative and obnoxious. The term yenta has been popularized in pop culture, such as in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, where the character of Yente the matchmaker is a central figure.
